Evans-DadzieTHE TEMA police have arrested a 38-year-old man who is said to be the main producer and distributor of local drink laced with suspected Indian hemp popularly known as wee bitters or Atemuda.

Evans Dadzie, a resident of Community 9, Tema and drinking spot operator, was arrested after his wife had lodged a case of assault against him at the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) in Tema.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Juliana Obeng, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Tema Regional Police Command who confirmed the arrest to DAILY GUIDE, explained that on November 4, 2015 at about 4:00 am, police personnel were dispatched to the house of the suspect to cause his arrest over his wife’s alleged assault case.

The police, she said, discovered two sacks filled with dry leaves suspected to be Indian hemp (wee), two buckets-full of local liquor laced with narcotic drug at the residence of the suspect and he was arrested for unlawfully possessing narcotic drug.

The police, she said, conducted further search at Evans Dadzie’s residence on the same day and other quantities of dry leaves suspected to be Indian hemp concealed in sacks and some soaked in a bucket with the local gin were retrieved.

ASP Obeng mentioned that Evans claimed ownership of the substances and the concoction which he claimed was his business.

She said the substances had been sent to the forensic laboratory of the Ghana Police Service for examination and that the suspect would be arraigned for prosecution as soon as investigations into the assault and the narcotic cases were completed.
