2016 will be tough – Amissah-Arthur

Vice President Kwesi Amissah-Arthur has predicted that the 2016 general election will be a tough one for his party, the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

According to him, although the NDC’s record under President John Mahama is enviable, the elections in 2016 still remain open. “We need the victory. More than half of Ghanaians have not decided yet who to vote for and we have to convince them that President Mahama is a safe pair of hands to manage the nation,” he said.

Speaking at a forum organised by the NDC tertiary students’ wing (TEIN) in Cape Coast in the Central Region, Mr. Amissah-Arthur urged party members not to rest on their oars in projecting the NDC to Ghanaians.

“We need to continue to work because next year is going to be tough. Anybody who tells you it’s going to be easy walkover they don’t know what they are talking about; it’s going to be tough. We need to project the work that we have done because the last four years have been some of the more difficult periods in the economic history of our country,” he admitted.

He said the economy is facing a lot of challenges. “The opposition can easily take advantage of this and use it against us,” he noted.

He also highlighted government’s achievements in some sectors of the economy, including agriculture – despite the sector’s slow growth rate this year.

The vice president said despite these challenges, the NDC had managed to invest heavily in infrastructure in the areas of education, health and security.
