Social media and telenovelas contributing to early sex – Doctor

sex-educationDr Jimmy Heyman, Director of Wellness Clinic, has advised young people to desist from watching certain scenes in telenovelas that have the potential of arousing their sexual appetite.

He explained that social media and some telenovelas are having negative influence on the adolescents, contributing to the incidents of early sexual acts.

Addressing school children in Accra at the 5th Youth Arise Conference and Talent EXPO2015 on the theme: “Early Why Not,” Dr Heyman noted that sexual immorality is a demonic temptation and sexual intercourse should be a practice between married couple.

”The law arranges that we marry and live to be called husband and wife the main purpose for sexual intercourse is for reproducing,” he added.

He noted that as young people growing up with good physical features, there would be lured into sex by fathers, elders, teachers, colleagues, using money and influence.

He urged them to hold on until when they are fully grown and off age and it is acceptable by the society and families.

He urged the school children to desist from homosexuality and lesbianism because it is not allowed in the biological spectrum.

Ms Baaba Botchway, Adolescent Educator at the Ministry of Health said virgin boys and girls should be proud of their status and should not allow their peers, media, friends to influence them to engage in early sex.

She also spoke against young ladies exposing their bodies to attract men to stop the ungodly behaviour.

Educating the adolescent, she advised parents to help their children to join good peer groups in other to boost their confidence and to encourage each other to grow up to become morally and social fit adults.

She advised the youth to talk to health providers on sex related issues and not their peers, abstain from sex and avoid social media platforms that endangers their future.

Reverend Dr Aba Wood Eshun, Director of the Christian Youth Club, expressed worry about society degenerating and girls are going into prostitution without being shy about it as boys engage in sexual relationships with older women in order to pay their fees.

She said this means that adolescent has been failed by the society and do not trust anyone anymore, hence they turn to the street to fend for themselves.

She indicated that 15 schools participated in the programme. They include: Maranatha Preparatory Junior High School, Anoba 2 Junior High School, Prince Charles International School, LA Anglican 2 Junior High School, Divine Provision School and Amen International School.

She called for sponsorship from stakeholders, sponsors and individuals for funds to finance their project and programmes.
