The Member of Parliament for Manhyia South Constituency, Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh has revealed to TOP news that 17 of the infamous Guantanamo Bay prison inmates are currently in Ghana, contrary to claims by President John Dramani Mahama and government communicators that only 2 are in the country.
Until this revelation by the law maker, Ghanaians knew that only Mahmud Umar Muhammed Bin Atef and Khalid Muhammed Salih Al-Dhuby are in Ghana under a special US-Ghana programme.
The arrival of the two created a lot of apprehension and heated debate among Ghanaians. The Christian Council of Ghana, the Ghana Pentecostal Council and the Ghana Catholic Bishop Conference have asked the President to return them where as the Muslim community thinks otherwise. In fact the Catholic Bishops called for a mass demonstration against the decision by government to host them.
Before the fear among Ghanaians regarding these two personalities will settle down, Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh in an interview with Top FM’s Parliamentary reporter, Yesmeen Abubakar Tetteh on Friday revealed that government has not been truthful with the people of this country because his trusted sources have told him that 17 of them are actually residing in the country at the moment, not 2.
He further told Yesmeen that he made an effort to find out from the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration on the matter, but the sector minister, Hanna Tetteh did not give him any tangible explanations.
He claimed that the government benefited financially from the arrangement between Ghana and the US government to host the alleged terrorists in the country.
