Former Ghanaian international Stephen Appiah has been unveiled as the Peace Ambassador ahead of Ghana’s general elections in November 7, 2016.
The former captain will, in collaboration with ex-football stars Joel Campbell of Arsenal and George Boateng of Middleborough, organise a Unity match in Kumasi and Accra in June.
At a media launch last Monday, Stephen Appiah said: “As the former Black Stars captain as well as former international footballer, I strongly believe my status today has been made possible by Ghana.
“From the moment I was offered my first opportunity to wear the national colours and through my days with the various national teams till I was made the captain of the Black Stars, I believe Ghana has been so good to me, and one of the best ways to give back to my beloved country is to commit myself to its development, which can only be achieved by fostering an atmosphere of peace and unity.”
Chairman of the National Peace Council, Most Rev Emmanuel Asante lauded the captain for this initiative, and welcomed any activity that seeks to pursue any peace agenda ahead of the general elections in November.
Former England and Arsenal player Sol Campbell said he was privileged to help in the promotion of peace in Ghana ahead of the general elections.
The Minister of Youth and Sports, Dr Mustapha Ahmed, outlined the activities for the unity match, saying there will be a two-leg match at the Accra and Kumasi Sports stadia, a football clinic, a nationwide tour of Ghana to pay a courtesy call on distinguished statesmen, and many others.
He continued by saying football is a powerful tool for promoting peace and development, thus the government will provide support to use sports as tool to achieve national cohesion and development.
