The Western Region recorded a total of 647 accidents in 2015 with 167 deaths resulting from them. The Region’s Manager of the National Road Safety Commission, Thomas Bismark Boakye told Skyy News the figure is an improvement on the 815 cases and 174 deaths recorded in 2014.
Speaking on Skyy Headline News, Mr. Boakye said the improvement is a result of the measures put in place to curb the menace. He stated that his outfit used “80 per cent [force] and 20 per cent education”.
The Road Safety Commissioner told host of Headline News Daniel Dadzie “the commission went back to the reinforcement of the road laws and ensured that road users observe basic road safety instructions”.
He explained they coordinated with the Motor Transport Traffic Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service “to ensure the compliance of road safety laws and also to educate communities on basic principles of how to keep safe when using the roads”.
According to Mr. Boakye, most of the crashes were recorded in the northern part of the region such as Wassa Akropong, Sefwi Wiawso and Ayanfuri among others as a result of an ongoing asphalt overlay in those areas.
He added that “accidents recorded were due to over-speeding and bad attitude of road users”.
