Gov’t to recruit 3,000 Mathematics and Science Teachers this year

The Ministry of Education will be recruiting 3,000 Mathematics and Science teachers this year as part of efforts in improving the falling standards of the subjects in the country.

Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Deputy Minister of Education, announced this during the Accra Institute of Technology’s (AIT) ninth graduation ceremony in Accra.

He added that policies to ensure that new universities to be established in the coming years run 60% science subjects are also underway.

The institution graduated 239 students in bachelor degree programmes and 13 in PhD programmes.

President of AIT, Professor Clement K. Dzidonu, speaking at the ceremony, announced that the school is offering accredited campus-based programmes in affiliation with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in the fields of Information Technology, Computer Science, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering and Business Administration.

“We also offer Open University programmes in collaboration with the Open University, Malaysia (OUM) at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels,” he noted.

He was delighted to announce that the school was graduating for the first time PhD students who studied at the university, saying: “That is no mean achievement if put in the context of the fact that the PhD per capita of Ghana is just 2.72 per million population”.

Professor Clement K. Dzidonu advised students to put enough energy into their education.

He noted that students must set higher academic standards in order to achieve educational success in life.

“Never give up on your academics; when the experience becomes difficult, dig in and figure out what difficulty you are facing as that will help you find ways to achieve your educational success”, Prof Dzidonu stated.

Prof Dzidonu, however, noted that it was expected of AIT freshmen to work hard and perform well as their colleagues in other universities.

“In this environment, you will have enormous opportunities to deepen your education, which will expand your understanding of society and the world.

“That will help you to acquire the necessary academic and professional skills, which will launch your career,” he added.

Prof Dzidonu further congratulated the grandaunds on their achievement, and expressed the confidence that the university was delivering products that could compete and do well on the local and the international job market.
