The crisis rocking the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Greater Accra took a new dimension, last Wednesday, as angry party supporters in the Ayawaso East Constituency chased away key party officials who had visited the area as part of their tour of the region.
Leading members of the constituency boycotted the party’s meeting, raising concerns that the executive including Member of Parliament for the constituency, Dr. Ahmed Mustapha, Madam Betty Mould Iddrisu and Regional Chairman, Mr. Ade Coker had come to the constituency to share monies to them.
Chased with clubs and broken chairs, the NDC officials, sensing danger took to their heels and abandoned the meeting.
The incident occurred at Nima, a suburb of Accra where the executives had reportedly gone to share some ¢10, 000 to party members in the constituency just as was done in Ashaiman and other places, apparently for them to stay faithful to the party.
But this move provoked the supporters who rejected the seeming juicy offer, thereby chasing away the executives and accusing them of failing to provide them with jobs.
“It is an election period; we should utilize the opportunity to make our problems known and visible tour leaders. Sharing money won’t solve our problems”. They charged
“We prefer jobs to money because, money wouldn’t last like the jobs which would provide us daily bread for a good living”
An angry member of the party who spoke to this reporter on conditions of anonymity wondered “I keep asking myself: What has happened to our conscience? Why would I support a party that can’t give me job? Why would I support a party that can’t guarantee my security in my own country? We should start worrying about our future”
Members constituency went into a crunch meeting the following day to consider their next line of action to press home their demand and get the party’s top hierarchy to listen to their demands.
All attempts to reach Mr. Joseph Ade Coker and Madam Betty Mould Iddrisu for response has so far proven futile as their phones rang without response.
