Residents of Abofu, near Achimota in Accra, have expressed worry about cracks on one of the footbridges on the N1 Highway, otherwise known as George W. Bush Highway, in the capital city.
The cracks, which have become so visible, are said to have been caused by a heavy truck that knocked the footbridge about two weeks ago.
The truck destroyed portions of the bridge and rendered the facility dangerous for road users, including pedestrians.
Articulating the concerns of the residents, Mr Timothy Wiredu, a car dealer, said many residents were worried about the way some drivers drove on the road.
Despite the regular education by the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) and other stakeholders on overloading, he said, the drivers continued to ignore such education and rather resorted to reckless driving.
Mr Wiredu called for stringent action, including punitive measures, to discourage the drivers from engaging in such reckless driving.
When the Daily Graphic visited the footbridge, it was realised that there were deep cracks while railings on its sides had become weak because the bolts that fastened them to the main frame of the bridge had been removed.
Sharing his frustration, another resident, Mr Emmanuel Adu, said he had stumbled several times on the footbridge partly because of the cracks and other damage on it.
He, therefore, appealed to the authorities to immediately take action to repair the bridge to prevent any major calamity in future.
