Narrating the story to the Daily Graphic, Mr Ishmael Agyemang Duah, a neighbour, said Maame’s parents were divorced.
He said Maame had lived with her mother at Potrikrom, near Adugyama since her childhood but her family could hardly afford three square meals a day.
He added that her mother had been doing some menial jobs to sustain the family and it was only God’s providence that enabled Maame to complete SHS.
Mr Duah further said after she had completed SHS in 2014, Maame realised that her mother was not in a position to finance her tertiary education. She therefore tried on several occasions to get a job so that she could assist her family and save some money towards her tertiary education, but to no avail.
According to Mr Duah, of late, Maame had been telling her peers that she wanted to end her life, but they had been discouraging her.
He said yesterday morning, he heard Maame screaming in her room and when he rushed there, he found her lying helplessly on the floor and foaming on the mouth.
She was quickly rushed to a clinic, where she is responding to treatment.
