Ace Broadcast Journalist Nhyiraba Paa Kwesi Simpson can state on authority that, the Out Patient Department (OPD) of Takoradi Hospital, the Second Major Health Facility in the Western Region was left orphaned as far as the services of Nurses were Concerned on Tuesday night, May 10, 2016 till the the wed May 11, 6m.
Acting on information given by a desperate patient on phone around 12 midnight, Nhyiraba Paa Kwesi Simpson drove to the Facility to verify the authenticity of the situation.
Nhyiraba Paa Kwesi Simpson reports below;
I got to the OPD around 12:30 am. The Place was virtually deserted.There was no single patient present. All the seats were totally empty. I turned to my right hand corner leading to the door where Patients take cards. There was this Middle aged man lying on a bench, he was asleep. I woke him up by tapping him on the legs.
I enquired from him why the place was virtually empty and he confirms to me the Nurses refused to report to duty because according to them, there were no enough security at the place, though he tells me he is one of the night security personnel.
He also admits a shortage of security personnel at the facility. He further tells me all patients who come are turned away.
I asked if there was any Doctor at Post and he answered in the affirmative. He led me to a Physician Assistant who was on duty. She gave her name as Theresah Fraiku.
She confirmed the boycott by the nurses because of lack of security. She however told me the absence of Nurses had virtually brought work at the OPD to a jolt because as she puts it, she can’t take up an additional responsibility as a nurse. I checked from the Pharmacy department and and they were also at post though they seemed to be virtually on holiday just as the Physician Assistant because of the absence of Nurses. I then took a leave of them and left
But whilst I was stepping out of the OPD and was heading towards my car, one question kept crossing through my thought……’what if a very critical case is rushed here, can the patient survive to the next referral Centre?’. My eyes were tears shot and I semi consciously soliloquized “Eb3n As3m Na )rok)do w) Ghana yi” (To wit, what at all is going on in Ghana) and off I sped…12:50 am.
