461,013 Candidates begin BECE today

storyThe Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) begins today, June 13 to Friday, June 17, 2016 across the country at 1,598 examination centres.

The West African Examination Council’s (WAEC) statistics indicate that a total of 461,013 candidates from 14,267 public and private junior high schools are due to write the examination.

The candidates – 239,963 males and 221,050 females – would write the examination, to be supervised by 15,695 invigilators.

According to WAEC, 441,561candidates would write the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) paper while 192,539 would be tested in French.

WAEC said 57 visually impaired candidates would also take part in the examination.

It said the council had also secured the services of 1,598 supervisors and 1,515 assistant supervisors.

WAEC statistics further indicate that the Ashanti Region has the highest number of 91,349 candidates, comprising 46,931 males and 44,418 females, followed by the Greater Accra Region with 81,920 candidates – 39,624 males and 42,296 females.

The Central Region has the third highest number of 48,949 candidates, out of which 25,424 are males and 23,525 are females, while the Western Region has 45,979 candidates, comprising 24,283 males and 21,696 females.

The Eastern Region presented 44,028 candidates – 23,383 males and 20,645 females – while the Brong Ahafo Region has 42,659 candidates – 22,716 males and 19,943 females.

The rest are the Northern Region with 39,916 candidates – 22,489 males and 17,427 females – followed by the Volta Region with 32,979 candidates: 18,205 males and 14,774 females.

The Upper East Region presented 20,713 candidates – 10,409 males and 10,304 females – while the Upper West had 12,521 candidates – 6,499 males and 6,022 females.
