Hockey: Adisadel College wins citizens inter-school tourney

adisadelAdisadel College (ADISCO) and Yaa Asantewaa Girls School (YAGS) emerged winners in the boys’ and girls’ categories respectively of the Citizens International inter-school hockey tournament played at the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium last weekend.

The tournament was held as part of activities to mark the 30th anniversary of Citizens International Hockey Club, one of the senior hockey clubs in the Greater Accra Region.

ADISCO finished first with a total of nine points and was closely followed by Prempeh College, who also finished with nine points but lost to Adisadel on goal difference.

Mfantsipim Boys placed third with seven points, with Achimota School occupying the fourth position with five points while St Augustine’s College placed fifth with no point.

In the girls’ division, Yaa Asantewaa topped the group with six points and was followed by Wesley Girls High School with three points and Achimota School with no points.

At the end of the tournament, citations were presented to the late Madam Theodosia Okoh and Dr Evans Anfom given that the tournament was held in honour of them.

Madam Okoh was the Chairman of the Ghana Hockey Association and later President of the Ghana Hockey Federation for over 20 years. It was during her era as President of the Hockey Federation that Ghana first qualified for both the Hockey World Cup and the Olympic Games.

Dr Evans-Anfom is a former Vice-Chancellor of KNUST, founding member of Gold Coast Hockey Association. He was the first President of Gold Coast Hockey Association from 1952 to 1962.

He was again appointed as the chairman of the Ghana Hockey Association in 1972. As chairman, he was in charge of the team that won the first Africa Hockey Cup of Nations in Cairo in 1974.
