Basic schools in the Western Region have received commendations from the Ministry of Education for topping the list of best performing districts in the 2015 Basic Education Certificate Examination, BECE.
According to a Deputy Minister for Education, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, “the number one district which topped all the 216 districts in the country after our analysis is the Sefwi Akontombra District”.
Speaking at the Western Region edition of the Government for the People Forum in Takoradi Mr. Ablakwa explained that the Western Region had 8 districts coming in the first 25 best performing districts.
“So you have Sefwi Akontombra coming at number 1, Sefwi Juabeso coming at number 6, Wassa Amenfi West coming at 9th, Wassa Amenfi Central coming at the 19th position, You have Bibiani Anwiaso Bekwai that came 21st, Sefwi Wiawso that came 23rd, Ellembelle came 24th and the Bodi district came to 25th”.
“In this top 25, you have the Greater Accra region managing 5 districts, followed by the Ashanti Region managing four, Brong Ahafo 3 and Eastern region 1”.
He commended the teachers in the region for achieving this feat saying that “we at the ministry are so excited because, it has shown that, when teachers are committed and accept to be posted to deprived areas which the top 25 had 15 of them, it does not matter the good roads, the electricity coverage, the beautiful buildings and nearness to the capital, the commitment, the punctuality, the love for our job and the care and guidance for our children produces results that we are seeing”.
Mr. Ablakwa noted that other regions will learn from the western region experience to know what it is that they are doing right “including my own region (Volta Region) which did not have any district showing up in the top 25 district”.
He charged all stakeholders especially parents, to continuing showing commitment towards children’s education “so they will be equipped with the skill that can be used to harness the rich economic resources of the western region”.
