President John Mahama has bemoaned the intolerant nature of the New Patriotic Party, saying it has created a culture of silence within their (NPP’s) fold.
According to him, the NPP is quick to commend any member capable of launching a vitriolic attack on him (Mahama) and his administration.
The president believes the main opposition party could win ‘an Olympic gold medal in insults’.
Speaking at the 2016 campaign launch of the NDC in Cape Coast, Mr. Mahama noted that even ex-president Kufuor, a stalwart in the opposition party, has not been spared the invectives.
“…It has been the characteristics and a feature in this elections; that the EC is attacked every step of the way by the NPP. And it is part of the strategy to discredit the EC.
“….The mark of a leader is one that is able to unite his supporters behind him. They are now quick to commend people who hurl insults at me and my government. Even the former President Kufuor has not been spared the brunt of their attacks.
“They are even quick to threaten people who differ with the opinions of the leader with physical harm. It is clear that they have already won an Olympic gold medal in insults…NPP has become an intolerant party…insults of chiefs, celebrities, and so on. This cannot be healthy for our democracy,” President Mahama said.
He added that though his comments will attract verbal abuse from the opposition party, he is unperturbed.
“….i know what i have said will be received with a barage of insults but he says he has developed a thick skin for insults”.
