PHOTO: Chief wanted for involvement in police recruitment scam

chief wantedThe Omanhene of the Kajaji Traditional Area, Nana Kofi Anyiko l, has been cited as the prime suspect in another fake security services recruitment.

He is alleged to have collected thousands of Ghana cedis from about 60 prospective recruits with the promise to secure them enlistment into the Ghana Police Service.

Known in private life as Richard Attu, Nana Anyiko is said to be playing hide-and-seek with the law enforcement agencies since the matter was reported in March this year by a teacher, Mr Kwaku Adjei Balfour.

That compelled a Sunyani Magistrate Court to issue a warrant on June 27, 2016 for the chief’s arrest.

Mr Balfour had told the police that he paid GH¢19,500 to Nana Anyiko to assist him to enlist 13 prospective recruits into the Ghana Police Service.

The chief has thus been charged with the offence of defrauding by false pretence.

Mrs Alice Attu

The chief’s wife, Mrs Alice Attu, told the Daily Graphic that her husband was believed to be hiding in Accra.

She claimed that in all about 60 people had been defrauded, with each paying between GH¢1,000 and GH¢1,500 for the phoney recruitment exercise.

She explained that Nana Anyiko claimed that he knew a police “boss” in Accra who intended to recruit people into the service as part of his retirement package.

Mrs Attu added that when her husband went into hiding after some of the victims began demanded a refund of their money, she had to find him for them.

Crime Officer

For his part, the Brong Ahafo Regional Crime Officer, Superintendent Mama Arhin, explained that even though many calls had been made to the chief, he failed to honour their invitations.

He called on the public who knew the whereabouts of Nana Anyiko to provide the information for his arrest.
