The president-elect, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will today, hold a crunch meeting with members of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Executive Committee (NEC) to discuss the way forward after winning the general elections.
It would be the first time that the President-Elect would officially meet with his party’s NEC.
Sources close to the party’s headquarters told the Ghanaian Times that top on the agenda is the scrutiny of his list of nominees for ministerial appointments.
It said Ken Ofori-Atta, formerly of Data Bank, is slated for the Ministry of Finance, Nana Akomea for Communications, Dan Botwe for Local Government, Ambrose Dery for the interior, and Dominic Nitiwul for Defence.
The source added that either Frema Osei Opare or Sherry Ayorkor Botchwey has been penciled for the Foreign Affairs Ministry and Philip Addison or Ayikoi Otoo for Attorney General and Ministry of Justice.
Another proposal to be tabled at today’s meeting , our sources said, would be the President-elect’s decision to reduce the number of ministries and re-alien others.
The number of ministries, which currently stands at 24, may be pruned down to 19.
It said the Ministries of youth and Sports, Power, Chieftaincy and Traditional Affairs, Fisheries and Roads and Highways could be scrapped.
The Ministries of Fisheries, power, Roads and Highways would be integrated into Ministries of Food and Agriculture, Energy and Transport.
“That of youth and Sports would be split among three ministries, and Chieftaincy and Traditional Affairs brought under Local Government and Rural Development,” the sources added.
Most of the ministries may also be reconstituted and renamed in line with the President-elects vision to achieve accelerated development.
The 29-member NEC comprises party officials such as the National Chairman, past presidents, past vice presidents, sitting president, sitting vice president, general secretaries (present and past), among others.
