Nyantakyi hints at Avram Grant stay

GRANT-NYANTEKYITHE President of the Ghana Football Association, Kwesi Nyantakyi, has hinted that under-fire Black Stars coach Avram Grant will be allowed to see out the remainder of his contract which expires at the end of February 2017.

Reports have been rife in the media that the GFA will dismiss the former Chelsea boss following a string of poor results which have left the Black Stars in danger of missing the 2018 World Cup to be hosted in Russia.

But with the 2017 African Cup of Nations only one month away, President Nyantakyi says it will be prudent to focus on the tournament proper and not the future of the coach.

“We have not discussed at any meeting to replace Avram Grant. Perhaps, that would be done in the future, but at the moment, our focus is on the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations to be staged in Gabon,” Nyantakyi told members of the Ghana FA Congress on Monday.

“We have to plan well and ensure we present the best of players available. I said at WAFU recently that Ghana is going for the 2017 AFCON because Nigeria won it in 2013, while Ivory Coast did it in 2015, so 2017 is the turn of Ghana. These are the three power houses in West African football.”

Ghana has been drawn in the same group as Egypt, Mali and Uganda for the 2017 AFCON.
