Prof Oquaye was elected as Speaker on Saturday during the inaugural sitting of the Seventh Parliament of the Fourth Republic. He was nominated by the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensa-Bonsu, and, subsequently, seconded by

Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu. Right after the former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament was sworn in, Nana Akufo-Addo took to Twitter to congratulate the man he calls “my good friend”.

“Congratulations to my good friend, Prof Aaron Michael Oquaye, on his election as the Speaker of the 7th Parliament of the 4th Republic. 12:56 AM – 7 Jan 2017”

Prof Oquaye, who served in Parliament for eight years, has given clear indications of supervising reforms in some of the legislations of Ghana. He will be assisted by Joseph Osei-Owusu and Alban Bagbin as the First Deputy Speaker and Second Deputy Speaker respectively.
