A popular Rapper/Dancehall Artiste in Sekondi-Takoradi, Ras Ebo real name Ebo Ennin partly blames the avalanche of foreign soap operas on Ghanaian televisions (TVs) for the incessant suicides amongst the youth in Ghana lately.

Speaking on the weekly OC Showbiz Review on Skyy Power FM in Takoradi, Ras Ebo who joined the panel members on the show mentioned that watching of foreign soap operas which has become the preoccupation of most Ghanaians, especially the youth during the evenings is inculcating some foreign habits in them. Ras Ebo stated that the soap operas are teaching both good and bad habits which is making most of the youth copy what they see blindly without questioning them.

“Their way of life is different from ours. When the white is depressed he/she can just take his/her life and that is what some people are learning from them when they watch the soap operas. I think it is also a cause of the suicides in Ghana recently” Kuush Family CEO, Ras Ebo told listeners of OC Showbiz Review on Saturday (11th March, 2017).

Although suicide is not a new phenomenon in Ghana as cccording to Dr Akwasi Osei the Chief Executive of the Mental Health Authority, Ghana records about 1,500 suicide cases annually. This disturbing figure is projected to go up considering the rate of suicides in 2017 which is only three (3) months old.
