UCC Students vandalise hall

At least three students of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) were reportedly stabbed on Friday following a clash between some students from the University of Ghana, Legon, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and their colleagues at UCC.

One of the students was said to be in critical condition after he was reportedly stabbed several times when he was entering his hall from night studies.

According to sources, some residents of Commonwealth Hall, the University of Ghana and Unity Hall of KNUST, who had been invited for a programme at ATL Hall, ended up attacking residents of Oguaa Hall at UCC following a misunderstanding.

The skirmishes, the sources said, erupted when porters of Oguaa Hall refused to allow some naked Vandals, Unity and ATL students into the hall.

Several properties worth thousands of cedis belonging to Oguaa Hall were destroyed, according to reports.

Information gathered by DAILY GUIDE indicates that there was a fierce-for-all fight between students of Oguaa Hall of UCC and their counterparts from the Atlantic Hall who were backed by others from the Commonwealth and Unity Halls of KNUST last Friday night.

According to information, it took the intervention of personnel from the UCC Police Station with reinforcement from the regional police headquarters to restore peace and order on the campus that day.

Available information from the police revealed that a number of students who were caught up in the melee, were treated and discharged at the UCC Hospital.

One student, who was stabbed in the spine, was rushed to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital but was transferred to the 37 Military Hospital in Accra due to his critical condition.

DAILY GUIDE further gathered that another student from the Cape Coast Technical University, who was on campus to visit a friend, was stabbed in the forehead, back and hand, and is also receiving treatment at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.

The source added that a number of vehicles, including a Coaster bus with registration number GN 6841 Z belonging to Oguaa Hall, had their windscreens and other parts destroyed through the hurling of stones by the belligerent students. A police source corroborated the incident.

2 Students Suspended

Meanwhile, information reaching DAILY GUIDE indicates that two students namely, Prince Kwabena Agyemang and Augustine Awotwe Mintah, have been suspended for allegedly instigating the fracas.

A letter dated March 17, 2017 and signed by the Director of Academic Affairs, Jeff Teye Onyame, stated that the students were expected to stay away from UCC campus during the period of their suspension.

Mr Teye Onyame claimed the suspended students were expected to resume their studies at the beginning of the second semester of the 2017/2018 academic year.
