“We’ve reached an agreement, we’ve told Bauza he’s ceased to be the national team coach,” the president of the Argentina Football Association (AFA) told journalists after a meeting on Monday. Bauza has presided over  a string of poor results with the recent coming in the form of a 2-0 defeat at the Estadio Hernando Siles in La Paz, Bolivia. The match played on March 28 was a 2018 world cup qualifier.

The Albiceleste are currently fifth on the 10-team group in South America and with four round of matches to go, the 2014 losing finalists risk missing the global showpiece in Russia. They are expected to be without talented captain Lionel Messi, who is serving a four-match ban. Argentine captain Lionel Messi is serving a four-match ban for abusing a referee Sevilla coach Jorge Sampaoli is highly tipped to take over from Bauza, whose just-truncated tenure saw him win only three of his eight official assignments.

A fifth place finish for the two-time world champions will see them play an Oceanian side in a play-off. Brazil have already taken one of the four automatic places for the continent while Bolivia and Venezuela are out of contention. Argentina’s next qualifier will be on August 31, 2017 away to Uruguay.
