Out of the 26 names presented by the President for confirmation as District Chief Executives, only the three districts appear
dissatisfied. They districts are: Mpohor, Jomoro and Shama.
In Shama, for instance, the aggrieved party supporters poured out onto the street to kick against Joseph Amoah on grounds that he and the Member of Parliament for the area come from Inchaban.
They aggrieved party supporters strongly demand that the DCE is picked from another community to guarantee balance of power in the Shama district.
But chiefs representing 54 traditional communities in the Shama district under three paramount divisions, in the Western Region, have thrown their weight behind the president’s nominee for District Chief Executive position in the area.
At a press conference ogarnised on Saturday to explain their position on the raging subject in the district, the chiefs, led by Nana Kwamena Wianu II, chief of Yabiw, who also doubles as Acting Paramount chief for Shama, argued that the position adopted by the disgruntled members of the community was untenable.
They said the position was not backed by any law and, therefore, cannot represent the views of the people in the Shama district.
“We the chiefs and elders of Shama traditional area, representing 54 communities, do hereby disassociate ourselves from the unnecessary demonstration being organised by some few people in the Shama district against the President’s nominee for the position of District Chief Executive (DCE),” the chiefs declared.
They said they respected the laws governing the country’s decentralisation concept; the process used by government leading to the nomination of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives, and will never do anything contrary to thwart the process.
In addition, they said the nominee was the most suitable candidate for the position based on his accumulated experience.
The traditional rulers also shot down the argument of power being concentrated in the Inchaban area simple because the MP and DCE were all coming from that end of the district.
According to the chiefs, the practice has not always been the case in the district and, therefore, could not be used as yardstick to cause disunity and discomfort in the district.
Aside Shama, the Jomoro District in Nzema has also been boiling following the announcement of the nominees by the President.
Aggrieved members of the NPP who are uncomfortable with the nominee have appealed to the President to rescind the decision.
Similarly, some supporters of the NPP at Mpohor in the Wassa area are up in arms against the nominee for DCE.
They are of the view that the nominee would not improve the electoral fortunes of the party in the constituency.
