Assemblyman, 13 others caged over attack on Somanya Police

1Fourteen persons, including an assemblyman accused of being behind events that lead to the attack on Somanya Police Station in the Eastern Region, have been refused bail by the Circuit Court in Koforidua, and are to spend the next two weeks in custody.

Police say the assemblyman Ebenezer Jones Adamtey Dendendin led his accomplices to attack the offices of the Electricity Company of Ghana in Somanya last Friday causing destruction to properties. His always triggered a further attack on the Police Station in Somanya on Monday by some group of persons who demanded that the assemblyman is released from lawful custody.

They set ablaze a Police patrol vehicle. Thirteen of the rioters were arrested by the Police on Monday, May 29 and put before the Circuit Court on Tuesday where each of them pleaded not guilty five counts They are Tei Israel, 22; Michael Adjeu Nortey, 17; Wisdom Sackitey,29; Theophilus Narh,29; and Alnice Nana Kwesi, 27; Wisdom Tetteh, 25 and Jerry George,35,.

The rest are Oko Meshach,24; Senyo George, 25; Felix Tawiah,20; Bacha Emmanuel, 22; Kwesi Amanda, 32 and Emmanuel Tetteh,25. The assemblyman also pleaded not guilty to three counts of damage, demonstrating without observing Public Order Act and provocation of riot. They have been remanded to appear again on June 13 by the court presided over Madam Mercy Adei Kotei.

But their lawyers have served notice they would proceed to the High Court to seek bail for the accused persons. Meanwhile, the Koforidua Circuit Court ‘B’ has also remanded into Police custody, 12 other accused persons who were also arrested in connection with the last Friday riot. They are to appear again in court on June 13, 2017 .
