Fire service probes attack on radio station

Management of the Ghana National Fire Service has set up a committee led by DCFO William Yawson, Director of Fire Safety, to investigate the assault on two newscasters of Bryt FM by some personnel of the Fire Service in the Eastern Region.

The three-member team was dispatched to Koforidua, the regional capital, yesterday to report back by Wednesday, May 25, 2017, according to statement available to us.

The Fire Service personnel in the Eastern Region allegedly went to the station on May 19, 2017 to attack the newscasters for airing a story of the command’s delay in responding to an incident which resulted in the death of a 12-year-old boy.

The Chief Fire Officer, Dr Albert Brown Gaisie, said in a statement that the Command’s attention was drawn to the story after it had been published by some newspapers.

The committee set up, he noted, would ascertain the alleged negligence or delay on the part of the Eastern Regional Fire Command that caused the death of a boy.

“The committee will also determine the efforts of the Service in handling the pre-incident operational activity prior to the boy’s death,” he said.

The Chief Fire Officer said the work of the committee is to confirm whether the regional fire commander and his team of officers made any attempt to assault the production team of Bryt Fm.

He assured the station that the Fire Service has a good working relationship with the media, Bryt Fm included.

It would be recalled that some security personnel rescued two newscasters of Bryt Fm, a Koforidua-based radio station, on Friday when officials of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) stormed the studio to beat them up.

That followed news aired at the mid-day s in respect of a 12-year-old boy who got drowned on Thursday, May 18, 2017 in Koforidua.
