34 Arrested over Captain Mahama murder

At least nine people have been arrested in the Ashanti Region over the gruesome murder of Captain Maxwell Mahama by a mob at Denkyira-Obuasi in the Central Region about a week ago.

This brings to 34 the number of suspects arrested in connection with the murder of Captain Mahama.

Eight people were arrested in the Western Region over the weekend, including the woman seen in the murder video, the police have confirmed.

She was arrested Friday night, the Central Regional Police Commander, DCOP David Ampa Benni, told Accra-based Starr FM.

Another suspect identified as Appiah Emmanuel was also arrested on Friday at Sefwi Dwinase in the Sefwi Wiawso Municipality of the Western Region in addition to six suspects picked up at Tarkwa.

The Director-General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), DCOP Bright Oduro, at a press briefing, said 16 persons had been nabbed, including the assemblyman of the area, William Baah, who is alleged to have incited the mob action against the young soldier.

The police said the woman, who raised false alarm over the identity of the soldier – a snail seller – had been identified but was yet to be arrested.

The Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), ASP Juliana Obeng, confirmed to us that nine suspects were arrested in the region over the weekend.

The army officer was lynched by the mob in the farming community during jogging in the early morning of last week Monday.

He was framed up as an armed robber by a snail seller at the roadside.

Videos of his lynching went viral on social media platforms in which the deceased army officer was heard shouting and declaring his innocence but the mobsters would not listen to him.

At the weekend, nine people, made up of six men and three women, including a 12-year-old boy, were arrested at Manso-Nkwanta in the Amansie West District of the Ashanti Region on suspicion of murder, ASP Juliana Obeng, said.

According to her, all the suspects had been transferred to the national CID headquarters in Accra where they would be interrogated.

ASP Ambrose Aboagye, the Atwima Mponua District Police Commander, also confirmed that one person, Kwame Tufuor, 36, was picked up at Domeabra, near Nyinahin, Sunday morning.

He maintained that another suspect, whose name was given as Kwame Agyei, 40, who was with Tufuor, however, managed to escape, and the police are doing everything possible to arrest him.

The Police PRO indicated that other suspects would be sent to the CID headquarters early this week to assist in investigations.
