Mrs. Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca and her spouse were welcomed by the Vice-President, Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, at the Kotoka International Airport in Accra yesterday.
The visit is expected to, among others, strengthen the bilateral relations and enhance economic cooperation between the two countries.
As part of activities lined up for the visit, the Malta President and her spouse will be attending a church service at Holy Spirit Cathedral in Adabraka and later meet the President of Ghana, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo Addo, at the Flagstaff House today.
The Malta President is expected to lead a delegation of companies in Malta to explore business and investment opportunities in Ghana. A business forum has however been scheduled for Thursday at the Movempick Hotel in Accra, where business representatives from Malta are expected to meet Ghanaian entrepreneurs to explore possible avenues of cooperation
Mrs. Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca is also expected to tour historic sites in Cape Coast, and later call on the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at the Manhyia Palace and the Hope X Change Medical Centre respectively; a facility that was built with the help of the Maltese government.
Ghana is the first country, in recent history, to have invited a sitting Maltese Head of State and also the first sub-Saharan country to establish a High Commission in Malta.
Former Foreign Affairs Minister, Ms Hanna Serwaa Tetteh, paid the very first official visit by a Ghanaian Foreign Minister to that country.
During that visit, discussions focussed primarily on possible areas of cooperation between the two countries, particularly in transport, maritime affairs and shipping by means of sharing best practices and expertise.
