Denkyira-Obuasi now called New Obuasi

Nana-at-DOThe Denkyira Traditional Council has decided to change the name of Denkyira-Obuasi to New Obuasi following the horrific killing of Major Maxwell Adam Mahama by some residents of the town.

The acting president of the council, Nana Agyei Nkyere II said the change of name is to give the town a whole new lease of life.

The town of Denkyira-Obuasi received condemnation from several people following the unfortunate incident.

But speaking at a durbar of chiefs and people during a visit by President Akufo-Addo Monday, Nana Adjei said the people of Denkyira-Boasi have regretted their actions and hence must be given another chance.

“We have just ended our 3-day fasting and prayer session, where we asked God for forgiveness and so we believe the Lord has forgiven us. And we also want to ask Ghanaians to forgive us for everything. The people have regretted their actions and require another opportunity.

“I have met with my council and we have agreed to go back to our old name which is New Obuasi so henceforth we want the town to be called New Oboasi and not Denkyira Obuasi,” he said.

Meanwhile, the President who visited the scene of the crime said government will ensure that the law deals with people involved in the murder.

Meanwhile, President Nana Akufo-Addo on Monday paid his respects at the site of Major Maxwell Mahama’s death when he visited the town as part of a tour of the Western Region.
