Manchester City, Tottenham, Barcelona and Chelsea have the most valuable squads in Europe, with the collective worth of each group of players estimated to be in excess of €1bn according to the latest research from noted body CIES Football Oberservatory.
Transfer values for every player in Europe’s top five leagues have been calculated using CIES’s own algorithm, with each club then given an overall squad value.
At an estimated value of €1.196bn, Manchester City lead the way with the most valuable squad of any club. Star playmaker Kevin De Bruyne is the single most valuable individual in the squad, with an estimated value of €145m.
Youth and the lasting quality that comes with it is partly why City’s squad is valued so highly, with Gabriel Jesus, 20, Leroy Sane, 21, and Raheem Sterling, 22, each more than €100m.
It is likely the same thing which has seen Spurs’ talented squad valued at €1.173bn. Prolific goalscorer Harry Kane is seen as the most valuable individual at €186m.
At Barcelona, where the squad is worth a total of €1.130bn, Luis Suarez and not Lionel Messi is listed as the surprising most valuable individual. That is perhaps as a result of the confusion surrounding the latter’s contract, as still no announcement of the actual signing has taken place.
Chelsea possess the fourth ‘billionaire’ squad at an estimated value of €1.044bn. Belgian superstar Eden Hazard has been given an individual market value of €121m.
At €165m, Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku is actually valued higher than fellow countryman Kevin De Bruyne at City, but the overall estimated value of the squad at Old Trafford is €919m – that makes it the most valuable of the non-billionaires.
Real Madrid and Liverpool are the only other two clubs with a squad value in excess of €900m.
Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar is by far the most expensively value individual at €218m, marginally less than his club actually paid for him in reality, but the overall squad at Parc des Princes is only the eighth most valuable.
Atletico Madrid and Juventus complete the top 10 with squads worth €800m and €743m respectively.
