Accra Mall settles GH¢2 million tax debt

• Two others closed down

The management of Accra Mall Limited swiftly paid GH¢2.3 million being an outstanding 2014/2015 VAT liability to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) when revenue officials visited the mall premises to close it down.

Two other companies were closed down as they failed to pay their debt during this exercise.
Chief Revenue Officer of the Debt Management, Compliance and Enforcement Unit, Wisdom Kofi Hetor, who led the team, first stormed the premises of Accra Mall to demand payment owed to the GRA at a tune of GH¢2,306,625 or close down the multipurpose mall.
According to Hetor, Accra Mall had been served a final notice on October 26, 2017 to make payment, but the company had failed to heed to the calls of the GRA.
“So before this exercise, we have had several meetings with them to make sure that we collect the money from them, but they always give varied excuses so we have no other option than to come today to execute the mandate,” he told the media.
The mall escaped closure as they were forced to pay GH¢2,306,625 when officials of GRA stormed their offices.
The GRA later went to Peasah-Boadu and Co., legal practitioners and consultants, who owed in excess of GH¢1 million for over three years. The place was closed down as they failed to make payment. A demand notice was earlier on issued to the chamber in October this year.
They have been given 14 days to make payment after closure or may decide to auction.
Next was at the Fadel Construction Limited at Haatso, who owed the GRA an amount of GH¢30,000 and were also closed down.
The GRA is continuing with its stick approach to encourage companies to come voluntarily and pay their tax debts.
