The General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, is convinced that his party would recapture power from the governing New Patriotic Party, NPP, if elections were held today.
In his view, Ghanaians have clearly noticed that the NPP lied to win power, for which reason they are messing up in their management of the country.
Despite suggestions that the NDC administration led by John Dramani Mahama caused its own defeat due to the various corruption scandals and poor management of the economy, some of the party’s top officials consistently walk in the belief that the over one million voters who gave the NPP victory, were deceived by the NPP into voting for them.
Mr. Asiedu Nketia says the NPP peddled a lot of lies during the electioneering period to lure Ghanaians, adding that since coming into office, the NPP administration has done virtually the opposite of what it promised.
Mr. Asiedu Nketia, who believed the NDC was very truthful to Ghanaians during their tenure of office, is thus certain that they would be able to snatch power from the governing party should elections be conducted today.
According to him, Ghanaians have lost hope in the NPP and would overwhelmingly vote for the NDC.
“What NPP government has done is making Ghanaians lose hope in them. So I am of the hope that even if elections are conducted today, NDC would win. I do know that some NPP members are unhappy with the current state of the country.”
“During the campaign, they made a lot of false promises, including promising heaven saying everything will be free. There are a lot of people in the NPP that would vote for NDC if elections were conducted today because they now know that NDC told them the truth. For the NPP government when prices of fuel go up, they say it has gone down. If you lie for power, this will be your end,” he added.
The NDC General Secretary made these claims in an interview on Asempa FM’s late political programme, dubbed Ekosii Sen on Wednesday, January 3, 2018.
Nuisance taxes to be repealed
The NPP while in opposition promised to repeal a number of taxes they described as nuisance taxes. After assuming office, only a few taxes were reviewed.
The NPP also promised to implement the Free Senior High School programme which they have done.
Meanwhile, other promises including the one-district one-factory, one-village one-dam, one-constituency one-one million dollars are yet to be implemented.
Corruption scandals
The first year of the New Patriotic Party’s administration has been rocked by a number of corruption allegations including the BOST contaminated fuel scandal, allegations of corruption by A-Plus against the two deputy chiefs of staff, allegations of conflict of interest against the Finance Minister over the issuance of a Bond, and recently the allocation of GHc800,000 for the creation of a website for the Special Development Ministry.
