Spio-Garbrah unveils ‘Forward Agenda’ to lead NDC’s 2020 presidential bid

He tried and failed, but that has not deterred Ghana’s immediate past Trade Minister, Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, from seeking the highest office of the land.

Spio-Gabrah made a fresh push to lead the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to recapture power in the 2020 elections when he unveiled the ‘Forward Agenda’ Wednesday evening.

The Forward Agenda is Spio-Gabrah’s grand plan to win the NDC flagbearership and subsequently the Presidency race in the next elections.

At a media encounter last night to unveil his Presidential ambitions for the second time,  he said Agenda will carry the message of sacrifice and commitment to developing Ghana.

The Agenda, he said, “is not one that can be led by just anybody. It is not just a matter of your talents, it is not a matter of the nature of your educational attainments or your financial capacity, it is the motivation in your spirit which is very difficult to measure.”

Spio-Garbrah’s move comes at a time when the opposition NDC is embarking on a reorganisation drive following divisions and infighting that has hit the party after abysmal defeat in the last election.

Meanwhile, the party says it will elect its Presidential Candidate for the 2020 elections by the close of 2018.

The NDC Constitution stipulates that a flagbearer should be elected two years ahead of elections when the party is in opposition.

John Mahama

With former President John Mahama tipped to be the favourite in the flagbearership race when the competition begins, Spio-Garbrah may face an uphill task getting on the ballot paper as NDC Presidential Candidate in 2020.

With this bold move from the former Minister, other presidential hopefuls like former Presidential Staffer Sylvester Mensah; former SSNIT Board Chairman, Joshua Alabi, and Member of Parliament for Nadowli/Kaleo constituency, Alban Bagbin are expected to also officially declare their intention to lead the party.
