The renegotiation reduced the cost of the vehicles from $9 million to $6 million.
Government said it accepted the vehicles to save the country from judgement debts because a binding contractual agreement had been entered into between the previous government and the supplier.
The Minister of Information announced this at a media briefing yesterday.
He said government rather chose to buy 34 instead of the 43 luxury vehicles, and decided to buy 100 Toyota Corolla vehicles for the police service, all at a cost of $8.8 million.
The variation, he said, is in line with government’s policy to retool the police service to enable it play its role of protecting the Ghanaian citizens effectively.
The cars are capable of firing rounds of ammunition and are designed to withstand the effects of a hand grenade.
With just days to exit office in 2016, the Mahama government ordered 43 bulletproof vehicles at a cost of $9.1 million for use by the presidency.
The new administration decided to hold on to the transaction pending further negotiations.
Hamid announced the negotiations have been completed, with the government saving at least $3 million of the public purse, albeit with slight variations.
Explaining the reasons why government accepted the vehicles, the Minister said: “That government is bound by the terms of the contract signed with Amalgamated Securities Ltd.
“In doing so, the government has, however, made sure to obtain maximum gain for the public purse and also for securing the security of the state,” he said.
The offices of the President and Vice-President were assigned five full option B6 armoured plated four-seater executive Mercedes Benz (S600) with radio and video communication.
Specifications of the vehicles
The specifications of the vehicles ordered by the previous government included eight cross-country vehicles to be assigned to the offices of the President and Vice-President, in addition to another eight cross-country armoured vehicles.
According to the list for allocation, two cross-country rapid intervention vehicles and two cross-country ambulances were ordered for the offices of the President and Vice-President.
Two pick-up trucks with radio and communication as lead car for the President and his Vice were also ordered.
For the office of First and Second ladies
For the office of the First and Second ladies, two full option B6 armoured BMW 730LI with radio and video communication, two full option B6 cross-country vehicles with radio and video communication, six BMW 530 vehicles with radio and video communication, four Light body cross-country vehicles with radio and video communication (for escort and media), as well two pick-up trucks with radio and video communication as lead cars were ordered.
