The Chief Executive of Engineers and Planners, Ibrahim Mahama, is demanding two million cedis in compensation from the Communications Director of the Ghana National Gas Company, Ernest Owusu Bempah, and Despite Group of Companies.
In a suit filed at the High Court in Accra on March 22, 2018, Ibrahim Mahama said Owusu Bempah alleged that he made his wealth through stealing.
The statement which the plaintiff considered defamatory was made on Accra-based United Television (UTV) owned by the Despite Group who were joined in the suit.
Mr. Mahama who is the brother of former president John Mahama claimed in his suit that he is likely to lose business deals as a result of the allegation.
“As a renowned businessman other business entities worldwide would shy away from dealing with the Plaintiff because of the damage caused to his reputation and character as a result of the defamatory statements made by the Defendant,” he stated in his suit.
He is praying among others a restraining order to injunct the defendant from publishing the same or similar defamatory statement about him.
Mr. Ibrahim Mahama is therefore demanding “punitive/exemplary damages of two million Ghana cedis for defamation”.
