Two separate operations conducted by the police yesterday dawn in Accra led to the arrest of two suspected armed robbers and the discovery of a place where the suspects hide their weapons.
Mohammed Iddrisu, 24, was arrested in the first operation led by COP Dr George Akuffo Dampare, until yesterday, Director-General in-charge of Operations.
Items retrieved from Iddrisu included a pair of scissors, a machete, five mobile phones and an unspecified amount of money – all loaded in a school bag.
In the second operation, the police apprehended another suspect (name withheld and currently assisting the police to arrest his colleague) and impounded three foreign pistols loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition each.
The weapons, including a steering gun which was loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition and two Bruni pistols, also loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition each, – have been described by the police as sophisticated.
When contacted, COP Dr George Akuffo Dampare said the police are poised to apprehend the suspects believed to be four in number who had been using the hideout.
The operation followed a series of robberies in and around Accra early this week, which led to the death of a Lebanese in Tema.
On Tuesday, February 27, 2018, four armed robbers attacked Royal Motors at the industrial area, North Kaneshie, took an unspecified amount of money and shot a driver in the process in broad daylight.
Another gang of armed robbers attacked a Forex Bureau at Spintex and made away with unspecified amount of money on Wednesday.
Another gang attacked and killed a 54-year-old Lebanese, who had gone to cash GH¢200,000 from a bank branch at the Tema Heavy Industrial Area.
