Prez. Akufo-Addo leaves for AU summit in Kigali


President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo left Ghana yesterday to attend the African Union (AU) Summit in Kigali, Rwanda.

The Extraordinary Summit of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the AU on the African Continental Free Trade Area comes off today.
The President was accompanied on the trip by the Foreign Affairs Minister, Shirley Ayorkor Botchway; Trade and Industry Minister, Mr Alan Kyerematen; and officials of the presidency and the Foreign Ministry.
He was seen off at the airport by Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the chief of staff and the top hierarchy of the security agencies.
Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia shall, in accordance with Article 60(8) of the constitution, act as President until his return.
The January 2018 Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the AU, held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, agreed to the Kigali Extraordinary Summit, where the Heads of State are expected to sign onto an agreement that would launch the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
AfCFTA is one of the flagship projects of Agenda 2063, which aims to deepen the continent’s integration process and make the largest free trade area created since the formation of the World Trade Organisation.
The free trade area is one of the flagship projects of Agenda 2063 and aims to deepen the integration process by allowing Africans to trade and move freely across the continent.
The President is expected back in Ghana today.
