Kente named after Prez. Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo was honoured yesterday with the naming of a Kente cloth after him.

This was when leadership of the Adanwomase Kente Weavers and Sellers’ Association paid a courtesy call on him at the Jubilee House.

They gave the name of the colourful hand-woven Kente as ‘Oseade?y? Akufo-Addo.’

Kente is a type of silk and cotton fabric made of interwoven strips and is native to the Akan ethnic group of Southern Ghana.

Speaking at the short ceremony, secretary of the Association, Kwame Nyame, said the decision to name the cloth after the president was impelled by the fulfillment of three of his major campaign promises – implementation of the Free Senior High School policy, restoration of teacher and nursing trainees allowances and the creation of the Office of Special Prosecutor, and the subsequent appointment of Martin Amidu as the Special Prosecutor.

“We honoured your Excellency Nana Addo to continue working hard to fulfill the ‘One District, One Factory’ and ‘One Village, One Dam’ political campaign promises made to help create millions of meaningful jobs, especially for the youth in this country,” he said.

Mr Kwame Nyame described President Akufo-Addo as a visionary leader who would help in the speedy development of the country.

Leadership of the association appealed to the president and his government to consider the option of setting up a Kente-weaving factory at Adanwomase to help create jobs for the youth.

President Akufo-Addo, who could not hide his joy, expressed gratitude for the honour done him.

In his response, he stressed the importance of the Kente industry to the socio-economic development of the country, with a promise by his government to do whatever it takes to ensure that the industry thrives.

If nothing at all, the president said he wants to be remembered as a man, who did not only keep to his word, but fulfilled all the promises he made to Ghanaians.

This, he said, had been the biggest motivation for his government.
