NDC Postpones ‘Charlotte Demo’ Over Amissah-Arthur’s Death

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has postponed its planned demonstration over the dismissal of the chairperson of the Electoral Commission Charlotte Osei due to the demise of the former Vice President, Kwesi Amissah-Arthur.

The opposition party announced Thursday evening that it will hold a major demonstration in the capital, Accra over president Akufo-Addo’s decision to remove Mrs. Osei and her deputies – Amadu Sulley and Georgina Opoku Amankwah – from the post following a recommendation by a committee set up by the Chief Justice.

Allegations of fraud and malfeasance were brought against them, following which the Chief Justice established a prima facie case against them.

The committee cited misbehavior and incompetence as reasons for the dismissal, pursuant to Article 146(4) of the Constitution.

The Committee concluded that Charlotte Osei blatantly breached procurement laws in the award of several contracts in her three-year period at the helm of affairs, prior to the 2016 elections.

According to the NDC, the government thus made this move to clutch onto power.

“They [NPP] have failed already. Ghanaians, everywhere you pass, are saying, for this government, we will see its back in 2020,” National Organiser Kofi Adams said at a hurriedly organized press conference Thursday evening.

Some supporters of the party had converged at the Obra Spot at Circle in Accra when news of the former Vice President’s death started trickling in. Disappointed by the sad news, party members who were ready to protest started dispersing peacefully.

Kofi Adams confirmed that the planned demonstration had been postponed indefinitely.

Amissah-Arthur died Friday morning at the 37 military hospitals after he collapsed at the gym.
