Absence of DCE got Twifo Hemang assembly members to cry

Members of the Twifo Hemang Lower Denkyira Assembly in the Central Region have appealed to President Nana Akufo-Addo to intervene to have measures in place for proper leadership at the assembly for its effective running.

The call comes as a result of months of absence of the District Chief Executive due to poor health.

The health of the DCE, Emmanuel Kojo Nannah, has been a matter of concern for Assembly members and residents for the past eight months, leading to complaints about the ineffectiveness of local governance in the area.

The assembly members say his absence has been negatively affecting the smooth running of the assembly, with some alleging that it has led to various levels of financial malfeasance in the assembly’s operations.

Some of the members who spoke to the media said his long absence has made the assembly “lose a sense of direction” in the planning and carrying out of developmental projects in the area.

An assembly member of the Berman electoral area, Nana Kweku Abben, said, “What is going on here at the assembly is not the best for the assembly members. We used to have the DCE with us who approved many things, but since about nine months ago, we have not been hearing about the DCE again”.

However, the assembly members were informed at their sitting on Tuesday, July 10, that the DCE has traveled abroad for medical care, an announcement that came as a surprise to most of them, and which has further alarmed them to ask the President to step in as quickly as possible.

Although some members think the DCE’s trip abroad should have been approved by the executive committee of the assembly, they admit the move could be pardoned due to the urgency in seeing to his recovery.

They are calling for measures to streamline authority at the assembly as well as to investigate several financial irregularities allegedly arising from individuals taking decisions in his absence.

The Twifo Hemang Lower Denkyira District Assembly, with its administrative capital, Heman, was carved out of the Twifo-Heman Lower Denkyira District (now Twifo-Ati Mrokwa) in 2012, and it boasts of the Kakum National Park and crops such as cocoa and others.
