GJA Boycotts Meeting With Police

The Ghana Journalist Association (GJA) says it will boycott a scheduled meeting with the Ghana Police Service as part of a campaign to register their displeasure with police brutality against journalists.

The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) is organizing the forum to improve relations between police personnel and media practitioners following an attack on several media practitioners.

The GJA says it cannot be part of the forum because of the Police handling of the assault of journalist Latif Iddrisu.

“Our position has not changed at all. We are still maintaining that position not to attend the workshop. Nothing has changed and we have communicated to them our inability to attend the workshop,” the General Secretary of the GJA Kofi Yeboah told Starr news.

He said despite the GJA’s non-participation being unfortunate, “it is a necessary step to seek justice” for the assaulted Multimedia journalist.

The GJA days earlier had some strong words for the Ghana Police Service for failing to punish its personnel who brutally assaulted Latif Iddrisu in March.

Iddrisu was assaulted while covering the arrest of the Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Koku Anyidoho at the police headquarters.

After four X-Ray examinations and a CT scan, doctors concluded that he had a fractured skull.

The president of GJA Affail Monney disclosed that the association will petition the presidency over the matter.
