Ex-convict jailed 20 years

The Wa Circuit Court has sentenced a 30-year-old ex-convict to 20 years imprisonment in hard labour for robbing a marketing officer of his personal possessions valued at GH¢ 1,250.00 in Wa in the Upper West Region.

The ex-convict, Aminu Issah, who had served various terms of imprisonment in 2002, 2006, 2008 pleaded not guilty to the charge of robbery but was found guilty by the court.

Sentencing Issah, the Presiding Judge, Mr Forson Baah Agyapong, said the ex-convict had proven to be a threat to society, hence he ought to be kept away to allow others to live in peace.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Daniel Yeboah said Issah, in the company of one Evans Albin now at large, robbed Mr Issac Opoku Agyeman of his mobile phone with its accessories and a cash of GH¢50.00 on his way home from work at about 8:00pm on June 1, this year.

According to Chief Inspector Yeboah, Issah, who was wielding a machete, threatened the complainant at a spot near the Fongu Primary School in a suburb of Wa during the robbery.

He said the complainant who lived in the same vicinity with the ex-convict at Wapani was able to identify him due to the moonlight and lights around.

The prosecutor indicated that Mr Agyeman in the company of the Neighbourhood Watch Dog Committee went to Issah’s house and pleaded with him to hand over the mobile phone but Issah told him that he had given it to his accomplice, Albin for keeps.

Chief Inspector Yeboah said when they went to the house of Albin for the items, he bolted on seeing them but when his room was searched, only the accessories of the phone were found.

The next day, he said a brother of the accomplice brought the mobile phone to Mr Agyeman and said Albin came and dumped it in his house.

Mr Agyeman then reported his ordeal to the police and Issah was arrested on June 3. He was arraigned and subsequently jailed.
