Porter jailed seven years

Shamsu Sallay, a 38-year-old porter was on Tuesday jailed seven years for defiling a 13-year-old girl who was wandering in search of her friend at Maamobi in Accra.

The accused charged with defilement however pleaded guilty.

Sallay saw the 13-year-old girl in his house and lured her into his room and defiled her.

When the court presided over by Mrs Abena Oppong Adjin-Doku asked Sallay if he had anything to say before he was sentenced, he pleaded with the court to forgive him.

Sallay admitted that he had sex with the victim once but on the second occasion he only fondled with her until he ejaculated.

He wondered why he had been arrested several months after defiling the victim.

“It is true that I had sex with the victim in December last year, why is it that I have been arrested several months after the act,” he quizzed.

The presiding judge commended the convict for his honesty and informed Sallay that she was giving him the minimum sentence that is seven years.

According to the trial judge the minimum sentence was a result of his honesty and for not wasting the court’s time.

“I like your honesty in court, I am going to give you the minimum sentence,” the trial Judge said.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Kofi Atimbire narrated that the complainant in the matter is a trader residing at Maamobi with the victim whilst Sallay also lived at Maamobi.

Prosecution said in June this year, the victim after school went looking for a friend and met Sallay in his house.

Prosecution said the convict lured the victim into his room and had sex with her and after the act offered her GH¢5.00.      

On July 28, this year Sallay repeated the act. However at dawn, prosecution said the complainant saw ruptured vagina of the victim and when she questioned her, she mentioned Sallay as the one who had sex with her.

Prosecution said the complainant took the victim to the Domestic Violence and Victim’s Support Unit (DOVVSU) at Nima and made a report.

The complainant was given a Police medical report form to seek medical care for the victim.

Sallay was later arrested and in Sallay’s caution Statement, he stated that he fondled the victim until he ejaculated.
