President Akufo-Addo holds discussions with German Chancellor Merkel

Bilateral talks are underway at the Jubilee House between President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo and his German Counterpart Dr Angela Merkel, on how the two side will collaborate to solve insecurity and migration in the West African Sub region.

The meeting would also explore business and investment opportunities in the mutual interest of Ghana and Germany.

Chancellor Merkel arrived, in Accra, on Thursday morning for a one-day State Visit, with Dr Gerd Muller, the German Minister of Economic Co-operation and Development; Mr Steffen Selbert, State Secretary/Spokesman of the Federal Government; and Dr Jan Hecker, Foreign Policy Advisor to the Chancellor; as well as business delegation.

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia received her at Jubilee Lounge of the Kotoka International Airport.

The German Chancellor inspected a Guard of Honour mounted by the Military, while a 21-gun salute was accorded her.

The national anthems of both countries were played in the spirit of friendship and cooperation.

There was a display by a cultural troupe to offer her a warm traditional Akwaaba.

Information Minister nominee, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, told a media conference in Accra, on Wednesday, that the meeting, would among other issues, discuss Ghana’s role in addressing insecurity in the sub-region, with focus on the political impasse in Togo, Mali and Nigeria and the recent efforts of President Akufo-Addo in providing leadership to address those challenges.

He said Chancellor Merkel would participate in a panel discussion on the ‘Compact for Africa’, which Ghana was to be beneficiary.

Ghana stands to receive some 100 million Euros to revamp the country’s energy and financial sectors.

Dr Merkel is also expected to visit the GIZ – funded project, Impact Hub, at Osu, in Accra.

Her visit to Ghana forms part of a three-nation tour, which has already seen her to Senegal. She would also visit Nigeria.
