Two miners granted bail for robbery

Two small scale miners from Nanankor near Wasa Akropong in the Amenfi East District have been granted bail in the sum of GH¢40,000.00 each, with two sureties, for conspiracy to commit crime and robbery.

The accused, Hayford Mensah, 27, and Agbeko Tugli, 32, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Chief Inspector Faustina Celestina Anaman, prosecuting told the Court, presided over by Mr. Emmanuel Bart-Plange Brew, that the complainant was a farmer and hailed from Wasa Ayaboi and whilst the accused lived at Nanankor.

She said at about 0400 hours on October 29, 2017, the accused and other accomplices now at large armed with pump action guns attacked a small scale mining firm at Wasa Nanankor.

Inspector Anaman said Kwame Kaba now deceased and Samuel Arthur who were security guards assigned at the site exchanged gunfire with the accused and their accomplices.

According to the prosecution though Mensah sustained gunshot wounds on his chest and shoulder, they managed to rob the company of some quantity of gold.

On December 4, 2017 at about 0500 hours, Inspector Anaman said Mensah, Tugli together with their gang again attacked the same company and attempted to remove the swinging motor from a faulty excavator machine.

In the process, she said they shot and killed Kaba and injured Arthur both of who were on duty.

On December 19, 2017, the police had information about the robbery and the accused were subsequently arrested from their hideout at Wasa Nanankor for questioning.

The prosecution said a search conducted in their residence by the police led to the retrieval of one face mask, hacksaw blade, two machetes and a wig in Mensah’s room.
