How to get motivated? There are thousands of self-help books, guides and videos on motivational techniques, but it doesn’t matter how long you listen to some motivational guru, telling you to pump yourself up and go for it, some things will just sap that motivation right out of you again.
So, even if you are motivated right now, let’s take a look at nine of the things that can burst that bubble and have you reaching for that TV remote again:
1. Losing sight of your goals
Whether it’s losing weight, earning more money or finding a new guy, don’t forget why it is that you are doing whatever it is that you’re doing. Concentrating too much on the task itself, rather than the objective is a sure way to make you give up early.
2. Being easily distracted
Don’t give in to the temptation of distractions and concentrate on the task in hand. There’s always something else that you’d rather be doing, but leave that until later. Telling yourself that you will ‘just take a short break’ from your task to do something more fun just won’t work.
3. Never even getting started
Once you’ve made your mind up, get on with it! Remember, tomorrow never comes and the longer that you leave off from starting a task, the harder it will become.
4. Allowing one small failure to kill a whole project
Don’t be put off by one small setback. If you set a target to lose a number of pounds by a set date and you miss that target slightly, then don’t quit the diet all together. It might be that you just didn’t set realistic goals in the first place.
5. Taking notice of negative people
There’s always someone who will take pleasure in raining on your parade, so just ignore them. Self-motivation is all about what you want, not what somebody else thinks, so don’t let others sap your determination.
6. Not eating enough
Not to be used as an excuse when dieting, but if you don’t eat enough, you’ll run out of energy, so be sure not to go all out on your project and forget to eat or you’ll run out steam half way through the day.
8. Giving up
Even when things get tough, keep the thought of that self-belief that first motivated you clear in your mind. You definitely can do it!
9. Boredom
Boredom can kill your motivation, quicker than anything else and make you more susceptible to the distraction problem. Do the boring task first and then you will have the interesting bits still to look forward to.
10. Taking bad news to heart
Receiving bad news of any sort is never good and you can feel your motivation evaporate away in an instant. Try and separate in your mind from the bad news from the task in hand and keep yourself on track.
Getting fired up is one thing, but keeping that motivation going is completely another. Setting realistic goals and staying focused though will help you to achieve those goals.
