The late respected Ghanaian poet Prof. Atukwei Okai will be buried today, September 14, 2018.
He passed on in Accra, aged 77, on July 14 at the Korle Bu Teaching hospital.
President Nana Akufo-Addo is due to grace his funeral at the Accra International Conference Centre.
“The Odoi and Okai families of Asere, Ga Mashie in Greater Accra Region and the Pan African Writers Association (PAWA) announce with regret the passing of Prof Atukwei Okai, which sad event occurred today July 13, 2018 after a short illness,” family spokesperson Prof Akilagpa Sawyerr said in a statement when he died.
“Prof Okai was a national icon, a former Government Minister and Secretary General of the Pan African Writers Association (PAWA). He died at age 77 and was survived by his wife Mrs Beatrice Okai and five daughters. May his soul rest in peace,” the statement added.
The scholar, cultural activist and author has won several local and international awards including the national award of Member of the Order of the Volta in 2007.
