Rains destroy Atebubu-Kwame Danso road

With the onset of the rains, the Atebubu-Kwame Danso road in the Brong Ahafo Region has become impassable for commuters and drivers who ply the road.

The late President John Evans Atta Mills cut sod for the construction of the 31 kilometer Kwame Danso –Atebubu road in 2011.  The GH32.5 million cedis road was expected to be completed in two years by a Wa-based road construction firm, A and N.

The contract was later re-awarded to Ghanem Construction firm after A and C failed to live up to expectation.

But nothing meaningful has been done on the road since then. Seven years down the lane, the state of the road has worsened with potholes becoming puddles.

Due to the nature of the road, the stretch has recorded many robbery cases leading to the death of a police officer and a prison officer who were shot by the armed robbers.

In 2017, Assistant Prison Officer, Nana Antwi, was reportedly shot and killed on the Kwame Danso-Atebubu road by armed robbers.

 A 30-year-old police constable, Frank Edu, who was escorting market women in a bus from Kwame Danso to Atebubu, was shot dead by suspected armed robbers in 2016.

Osei Bonsu, a driver who plies Kumasi-Kwame Danso in an interview with Citi News said it is horrible to travel on the road.

“It is horrible to work on this road, I believe you traveled on it and you have experienced what I am talking about. In the rainy season, it is a nightmare. After every trip, I have to use a huge chunk of the money I have made for repairs. The government must intervene; this area is a food basket,” Osei Bonsu stated.

The District Chief Executive for Atebubu-Amantin municipality, Edward Owusu, mentioned that a contract for the construction of the road has been awarded, but was unable to confirm when the construction would begin.

“What I know is that the road has been given out on a contract as said by the Finance Minister in the Mid-year budget. I am unable to tell when construction would begin,” Mr. Owusu noted.
