Takoradi kidnapper misses court appearance

It was a no show in the Takoradi Magistrate court in the Western region where kidnapping suspect is facing trial for breaking police cell.

Police failed to produce the 28-year old Nigerian suspect Samuel Udoetuk Wills, a prime suspect following the abduction of three girls in Takoradi in the Western region.

According to the prosecutor Inspector Bernard Ahensan, the suspect was sent to Accra from Sekondi prison over the week-end and had not arrived in time for the scheduled hearing.

He is standing trial for escaping lawful custody, causing unlawful damage and resisting arrest after he escaped a Takoradi police cell on December 30, 2018.

The suspect used an object to cut the iron rod for the ventilation in the cell and escaped, the Western Regional police command explained.

It took seven police officers, who were on duty during the escape, 10 days to bring back the suspect or face the law.

News of his escape irked residents in Takoradi who questioned the police’s commitment to resolve a kidnapping case which has since grabbed national media attention.

Mr. Udoetuk Wills was recaptured January 10, 2019 in an abandoned building. A dress and head gear of one of the victims was found.

The Police say they have a “strong belief” that the clothing found connects the Nigerian to the crime.
