3 Mandela Washington Fellows from Ghana and Nigeria collaborate on cyber-security project in Ghana

Three Mandela Washington Fellows from Ghana and Nigeria collaborated on a project to provide cyber-security, safety and career development knowledge to students at the primary and junior secondary level.

The Fellows are Sena Nyame, Founder of Little Things International, Ugochi Obidiegwu of The Safety Chic brand and Terence Addey Adams, a cybersecurity enthusiast with the Ghana Police Service. They worked with Beauty Sopka Adams, a passionate Child Friendly police officer of the Ghana Police Transformation Office to execute this project.

About 500 Students and teachers from the Osagyefo Leadership International School and 300 students from St. Thomas International School all in Ladadekotonpon Municipal Assembly in the Greater Region benefited from the safety and career workshop project dubbed ‘Train them Young Initiative’ #2TYI on the 4th and 5th of March, 2019 respectively.

The project started on Monday the 5^th of March with a training of selected volunteers to equip them with knowledge to step down the training to more school children in the region. The volunteers who were selected through an online process were from various background including, education, hospitality, law enforcement, finance etc., were taught general safety which was facilitated by Ugochi Obidiegwu and online safety which was facilitated by Terrence Adams.

The next day, the team visited two schools to train the children on safety, security and how to choose career paths. The first was Osagyefo Leadership Institute where Beauty Adams shared some self-defence tips with the students as well. Speaking with the headmaster of Osagyefo Leadership International School, Mr Seth Korgah, he was excited about the program and encouraged the team to continue to organise such projects to build capacity in safety and career development.

The next school to benefit was St Thomas International School where students from primary 6 to JHS 3 benefited from various training. Sena Nyame facilitated a special career session for the JHS 3 students in St Thomas International in preparation for the selection of schools into SHS.

The management of both schools were happy about the visit and have commenced plans with the team for further engagement.

The team is also excited about stepping up these projects across the country to build capacity of students to become safety conscious and also gain knowledge in making informed career choices.
