Review of Kofi Kinaata’s ‘Never Again’ song featuring Shatta Wale

With an enviable tag as a deep song writer, Kofi Kinaata has won the hearts and ardent support of both the young and old, lovers of secular and religious songs to the extent that some Gospel Artistes do not contemplate when performing his songs, even in churches.

The first release of the Fante rap god in 2019 ‘Never Again,’ an uplifting song does not only present a soothing melody which keeps the listener attentive from the first word to the last but inspires listeners to be optimistic in life regardless of the situation at stake.

“Even if you are put in water, show them that you’re a shark” this verse in the song peps up listeners to be adaptive to all situations and turn it around for the better. Like the life of sharks, this group of elasmobranch fishes are found in seas with depths of 6,600 feet and have a covering of dermal denticles that protects their skin from possible damage and also improves their fluid dynamics. So one should develop a resilient nature like the shark to withstand the vicissitudes of life.

“Party manso na nt)kwa pii, this year y3mp3 d3ma ade no, sika sie3 na epuiepue pii, this year y3ny3 d3ma ade no, TV series tsintsin tsinn, this year y3nhw3 d3ma ade no, chapel Monday to Sunday, Sofo y3mp3 d3ma ade no” listing activities that subtly consumes the time of people without making them productive, Kofi Kinaata even though acknowledges that these activities are part of the daily endeavours of people, he adds that balancing it with work will propel ones journey to riches.

With emphasis on the Monday to Sunday attending of church by Christians, Kofi Kinaata exhorts Pastors to pay particular attention to that and also encourage the members to work hard and put in efforts after their attendance to church. As even the Bible in Genesis chapter 1:1 which states that “In the beginning God created heaven and earth,” God was introduced to mankind as a hardworking God because creation/creating is working. So without work, the road to riches would be a hectic one. This further confirms the parlance “Success responds to work and not wishes.”

“One our way to riches, fire bon poverty,” this line follows after he listed the activities that takes away the time for people to be productive and adds that “do something and have faith in it, you’ll be successful.”

Shatta Wale enters the song and also buttressing Kofi Kinaata’s assertion that it shall be well if you put in hard work, he uses his life journey as quintessential to fans.

In the rap on the ‘Never Again,’ Kofi Kinaata appreciates that there are struggles in life with scads of bills that swallow people so if one does not make conscious effort to make it in life, it could be as disastrous as serving ‘gari soakings’ at ones wedding reception.

This is the second time in a song that Kofi Kinaata has warned fans and non-fans alike to take their destinies into their hands and not bank their hopes on people to help them to reach their destinations since even the miraculous manna, an edible substance which God provided for the Israelites during their forty-year desert journey stopped thousands of years ago.

The song is well appreciated in the rap as the other bars also advises listeners to know that when one tries something and he/she is unsuccessful at it, try it again, again and again till it is successful. This also confirms inventor, Thomas Edison’s 1,000 unsuccessful attempts at inventing the light bulb. In an interview when Thomas Edison was asked by an interviewer “How did it feel to fail 1,000 times?” Edison replied, “I didn’t fail 1,000 times. The light bulb was an invention with 1,000 steps.” So if you try “wrestling, boxing and it still doesn’t go on as expected, try karate, even if you fail start from scratch and come harder at it this time round” Kofi Kinaata raps.

In this era where social media has made people unnecessarily competitive, there are many who want to wear expensive designer clothes at all cost just to flaunt and send a signal of we-live-the-life. Kofi Kinaata in the rap said that one should live within their means and wear what they can afford without any witless desire to show off. Also, men should be responsible by getting married and not be deceived by side-chicks to holiday in Dubai (the preferred holiday destination for most slay queens).

With songs like ‘Susuka,’ ‘Sweetie pie,’ ‘The Whole Show,’ ‘Last Show,’ ‘No Place like home,’ amongst others, Kofi Kinaata has affirmed his position as an intelligent song writer who knows how to succinctly deliver a well thought through concept in less than 5 minutes. No wonder he has won ‘Songwriter of the Year’ at the Ghana Music Awards twice in a row.

Is ‘Never Again,’ a song that would win Kofi Kinaata the ‘Songwriter of the year’ award in 2020 edition of the Ghana Music Awards? Time will tell ooo!
